Short answer: ClickUp has far more features than Jinear, and if you need them, it is the better pick. Jinear is for people who want a smaller tool that they can self-host and learn in an afternoon. I build Jinear, so factor that in.
The short version
ClickUp's pitch is "one app to replace them all": tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, goals, time tracking, dashboards, automations and AI, with more than a dozen views. It is a lot of software, and teams often say it takes time to configure.
Jinear covers a narrower set: tasks, boards, a calendar, notes and files. It is an open-source (AGPL-3.0) ClickUp alternative for teams that do not need all of that software. You can run it on your own server, and the hosted Team plan is a flat price.
| Jinear | ClickUp | |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Hosted, or self-hosted with Docker Compose | Cloud only |
| Source code | Open source, AGPL-3.0 | Closed source |
| Free plan | Up to 3 people | Unlimited members, 60 MB of storage in total |
| Paid plans | Team: $24.90/mo flat, unlimited people | Core $9, Business $17 per user/mo (billed yearly; $12 and $25 monthly); Max $100; Enterprise by quote |
| Views | List, status board (kanban), calendar | List, board, calendar, Gantt, timeline, table, workload, mind map and more |
| Time tracking | None | Built in |
| Custom fields and automation | None | Yes |
| Docs and notes | Notebooks with nested rich-text notes | ClickUp Docs, wikis, whiteboards |
| Chat | None (removed on purpose) | Built in |
| AI | Bring your own: Claude or ChatGPT over MCP | ClickUp Brain, with a credit allowance per plan |
| Mobile | Installable web app (PWA) | Native apps on every platform |
Where ClickUp is better
- Feature depth. Gantt, time tracking, workload, goals, custom fields, forms, dashboards, whiteboards, chat. Jinear has none of these.
- Free plan for big groups. ClickUp's free plan has no member limit. Jinear's hosted free plan stops at 3 people (though self-hosted Jinear has no limit at all).
- Integrations and automation. ClickUp connects to most common tools and has an automation builder. Jinear has Google Calendar and MCP.
- Built-in AI. ClickUp Brain is part of every plan. Jinear only works with AI through an assistant you already use.
- Apps and maturity. Native apps, a large company, and years of development.
Where Jinear is better
- Self-hosting. ClickUp is cloud only. Jinear can run entirely on your own hardware.
- Storage on the free plan. ClickUp's free plan has 60 MB of storage. Self-hosted Jinear uses whatever storage you give it.
- Less to learn. Jinear has fewer screens, fewer settings and fewer ways to do the same thing. For a small team this is often a feature, not a gap.
- Flat price. Jinear's Team plan costs the same for 4 people or 40.
What it costs a team of 10
- ClickUp Core (billed yearly): 10 x $9 = $90 a month
- ClickUp Business (billed yearly): 10 x $17 = $170 a month
- Jinear Team (billed monthly): $24.90 a month
- Jinear self-hosted: $0, plus the cost of your server
Which one should you pick?
Pick ClickUp if you want one tool for everything, you need time tracking, Gantt charts, dashboards or automation, and you have the time to set it up.
Pick Jinear if you want a smaller tool you can self-host, your team needs tasks, a calendar, notes and files and not much more, and you would rather not pay per seat.
