Jinear vs Nextcloud: Self-Hosted Tasks and Files

Nextcloud's pricing and features were checked on . Prices change, so confirm on their site before you decide. If something here is wrong, email [email protected] and I will fix it.

Short answer: Nextcloud is the right choice if you want a full self-hosted replacement for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365: files, sync clients, office documents, mail, contacts and video calls. Jinear is the better choice if task management is the main job and you want tasks, calendar, notes and files designed to work together. I build Jinear, so factor that in.

The short version

Nextcloud is a platform. Its core is file sync and share with desktop and mobile clients, and its app store adds Calendar (CalDAV), Contacts, Talk, Office, Mail, and Deck, a kanban board. It is open source (AGPL) and has a very large community and a company that sells enterprise support.

Jinear is a single product built around tasks. The calendar shows tasks next to events, notes live in notebooks next to the work, and files can be attached to tasks. It is also AGPL-3.0 and self-hostable.

Where Nextcloud is better

  • Breadth. Files, calendar, contacts, mail, office documents, chat and video in one install. Jinear does not try to replace any of that except calendar and basic file storage.
  • Files. Desktop sync clients, versions, sharing links and online editing. Jinear's file storage is a place to keep and share files, not a Dropbox replacement.
  • Standards. CalDAV and CardDAV mean your phone's built-in calendar and contacts apps just work. Jinear offers an iCal feed and Google Calendar sync, not a CalDAV server.
  • Community and support. A huge community, years of history, and paid enterprise support if your organization needs it.

Where Jinear is better

  • Task management. Deck is a simple kanban board. Jinear's tasks have assignees and collaborators, subtasks, repeating reminders, checklists and per-team workflow statuses, and they show up on the calendar.
  • One product, not a set of apps. Tasks, calendar, notes and files are designed together, with one UI and one permission model. In Nextcloud they are separate apps with separate release cycles.
  • Less to maintain. Nextcloud's app system is powerful, but upgrades across many apps take care. Jinear is one stack with one version.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Nextcloud if you want to move your whole office suite off big cloud vendors, or if file sync is the main need.

Pick Jinear if you want a self-hosted tool where tasks are the center and the calendar, notes and files support them. Running both is also reasonable: Nextcloud for files and mail, Jinear for planning the work.
