Short answer: monday.com is the better choice for teams that want highly customizable boards, dashboards and automations across departments. Jinear is the better choice for small teams that want to self-host or pay a flat price for tasks, a calendar, notes and files. I build Jinear, so read with that in mind.
The short version
monday.com is a board builder. Each board is a table of items with columns you choose (status, people, dates, numbers, formulas), and you add views, automations, integrations and dashboards on top. It is used well beyond software teams: marketing, sales, operations, HR.
Jinear is a fixed-shape tool for tasks, a calendar, notes and files. You cannot add columns, but there is also less to configure. It is an open-source (AGPL-3.0), self-hostable monday.com alternative with a flat price.
| Jinear | monday.com | |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Hosted, or self-hosted with Docker Compose | Cloud only |
| Source code | Open source, AGPL-3.0 | Closed source |
| Free plan | Up to 3 people | Up to 2 seats, 3 boards, 3 docs |
| Paid plans | Team: $24.90/mo flat, unlimited people | Basic $9, Standard $12, Pro $19 per seat/mo (billed yearly), minimum 3 seats; Enterprise by quote |
| How seats are sold | Not per seat | In fixed bundles (3, 5, 10, 15 and so on) |
| Views | List, status board (kanban), calendar | Table, kanban, calendar, Gantt, timeline, charts and more |
| Custom columns | None | Many column types |
| Automation and integrations | None, apart from Google Calendar and MCP | Monthly action quotas by plan |
| Time tracking | None | From Pro |
| Docs and notes | Notebooks with nested rich-text notes | monday Docs |
| Mobile | Installable web app (PWA) | Native iOS and Android apps |
Where monday.com is better
- Customization. Columns, formulas, dashboards and views let you model almost any process. Jinear's task model is fixed.
- Automation and integrations. monday.com can move items, notify people and sync with other tools on rules. Jinear cannot.
- Planning views. Gantt, timeline and workload views exist on its paid plans. Jinear has no timeline view.
- Cross-department use. monday.com is built for marketing, sales and operations teams too. Jinear is built for small teams doing project work.
- Company and support. A large vendor with sales, onboarding and support teams. Jinear has one maintainer, so you talk directly to the person who writes the code, but there is no onboarding team.
Where Jinear is better
- Self-hosting. monday.com is cloud only. Jinear runs on your own server.
- Pricing shape. monday.com sells seats in bundles with a three-seat minimum, so a team of 6 may pay for 10. Jinear's Team plan is one price for any team size, and self-hosting is free.
- A calendar and files that come with it. Jinear's calendar syncs both ways with Google Calendar, and its file storage has folders and access control.
- Less to set up. You start with tasks, statuses and a calendar that already work.
What it costs a team of 10
- monday.com Standard (billed yearly): 10 x $12 = $120 a month
- monday.com Pro (billed yearly): 10 x $19 = $190 a month
- Jinear Team (billed monthly): $24.90 a month
- Jinear self-hosted: $0, plus the cost of your server
monday.com shows prices in your local currency, so the numbers on its page may look different from these US dollar prices.
Which one should you pick?
Pick monday.com if you need custom boards, dashboards and automations, especially across several departments, and you are fine with a per-seat cloud tool.
Pick Jinear if you are a small team that wants tasks, a calendar, notes and files at a flat price, or you need to run the tool on your own infrastructure.
