Until now Jinear came in two looks: light and dark. You spend a lot of hours in a project management tool, so it should look the way you want. This release replaces the light and dark switch with themes, fonts, and mouse cursors.
64 themes
If you write code, you probably already have a favorite theme. There's a good chance it's here:
- Jinear. Classic Light and Classic Dark, the two looks Jinear always had. They haven't changed.
- VS Code. The themes that ship with VS Code: Dark Modern, Light Modern, Dark+, Light+, Monokai, Solarized Dark and Light, Quiet Light, Abyss, and a few more.
- JetBrains. The themes from IntelliJ IDEA and the other JetBrains IDEs: the new Dark and Light, Darcula, IntelliJ Light, and more.
- Popular. Themes people install on top of their editor: Dracula, One Dark Pro, GitHub, Nord, Tokyo Night, all four Catppuccin flavors, Gruvbox, Ayu, Material, Rosé Pine, Everforest, Monokai Pro, SynthWave '84, and more.
A theme changes more than the background. Text, links, buttons, badges, text selection, and the blinking text cursor all take the theme's own colors.
Picking one
The moon button at the bottom of the side menu is now a palette button. It opens the Appearance window. You can also get there from your account: Appearance, then Change theme.
- Search by name, or show only light or dark themes.
- Preview before you pick. Move the mouse over a theme, or use the arrow keys, and the whole app changes behind the window.
- Pick with a click or Enter. Esc closes the window and puts your theme back.
Jinear doesn't switch themes when your device switches between light and dark. The first time you open it, it starts in Classic Light or Classic Dark to match your device. After that, the theme is the one you picked, until you pick another.
Fonts
The Appearance window has a second tab, Font & cursor. Inter is still the default. You can also pick:
- System, the font your device uses everywhere else.
- IBM Plex Sans, Roboto, Nunito Sans, and Lexend.
- Atkinson Hyperlegible, a font made to be easy to read.
- JetBrains Mono and Fira Code, if you want Jinear to look like your editor.
Mouse cursors
This is the least serious part of the release, and my favorite. There are six mouse cursor sets: Cat paw, Dog paw, Duck, Magic wand, Pixel, and Mitten. Each set has its own look for pointing, clicking, and dragging. Text fields keep the normal text cursor, so typing feels the same.
Mouse cursors only show on devices with a mouse or a trackpad, so you won't see the option on your phone.
If your browser supports it, the same tab also lets you change the shape of the text cursor: a thin bar, a block, or an underscore, the way a code editor does.
What's not in it yet
Your choices are saved on the device you make them on. Your phone and your laptop each keep their own theme, font, and cursor. They don't follow your account yet.
You can't make your own theme or share one yet. Themes are built so that this can come later.
The high contrast themes from VS Code and JetBrains aren't here. I tried them, and some buttons were hard to read, which is the opposite of what high contrast is for. I left them out for now.
